ARC Podcasts

What is a podcast?
Podcasts are MP3 audio files that are automatically downloaded to your personal computer, and then transferred to an iPod or other MP3 player using podcasting software such as iTunes. Podcasts aren’t just MP3 files on a Web site. Podcasting refers to the broadcasting of MP3 or other media files from a Web site through an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) syndication feed. Users subscribe to the RSS feed using podcasting software and content is delivered automatically.

Why listen to podcasts?
Convenience and independence. Listen to Web broadcasts anywhere, anytime with podcasting software or applications that read RSS syndication feeds delivering fresh, new content to your computer automatically – just like news feeds. With podcasting, listeners decide what programming they want to receive and when they want to listen to it. Podcasting pushes content to the user instead of the user having to come to the content.

Do I need an iPod to listen to podcasts?
No. While the term podcasting is derived from iPod+broadcasting, you do not have to have an iPod to listen to a podcast. In fact, you can listen to podcasts on any device or application that will play MP3 files such as an MP3 player or Windows Media Player or QuickTime on your computer. Requirements for accessing podcasts are: a computer, Internet connection and podcasting software such as iTunes. Podcasts become portable once you transfer them to your favorite MP3 player.

How do I subscribe to a podcast?
Simply download and install podcasting software onto your computer. Add the podcast RSS feed to your podcast software application. Podcast software applications vary so consult the software instructions on how to add podcast feeds to your list. As they become available, new podcasts and MP3s will appear.
